*Every owner at the Kahana Outrigger was asked what their favorite places and experiences were on the island of Maui. Following is their responses with links and tips to help our guests connect with them. Aloha!
What is the best way to get to Maui?
The best way is to fly into Maui’s airport in Kahului (OGG). It is the most active and largest airport on Maui. There is a smaller airport, Kapalua Airport, located on the West side, it services smaller planes from neighboring islands such as O’ahu, Hawaii, Moloka’i, and Kaua’i.
Do we need to rent a car?
A car is a necessity. You will have purchase food, dine out at some of the best restaurants and see the magnificent sights there are to see. Such as the Road to Hana, it is a magnificent drive along the coast.
What is the best time of the year to see Maui?
Maui is beautiful all year long! If you are from a cold climate you likely will want to come in winter months. The weather is a little cooler and you will have more rain, BUT, from December through most of May you will have the most amazing time watching the whales that have migrated to calf and nurture their young right off the beach. It is a sight you will likely not see anywhere else.
The summer months are busier, the weather is warmer and there are more tourists. The off seasons, May and early June are shoulder months as are September and early October.
There are fewer people here and the rates tend to go down so you can save some money.
What time of year is my favorite?
Any time is great on Maui but if had to pick my favorite it would be March. The weather is great, and the whales are everywhere.
What are your favorite places to eat?
The food choices on Maui are nearly limitless. I would suggest you get a hold of Maui Magazine; there you can find dozens of places to eat. There are a few within walking distance to the condo, The Maui Brewing Company is about a ten-minute walk south, great brew food and great beer. I am not a beer drinker, but I do love the Coconut Porter.
Best place to eat sushi?
Just a few more steps south there is a small sushi spot called Miso Fat. It’s small place and the food is great. Just north in Kapalua there is a sushi restaurant called Sansei, great sushi, a little on the expensive side BUT if you get there around 5:30 and wait in line to be the first group to get in you will receive a substantial discount.
What is my favorite restaurant?
I have always claimed that if I knew I were to die tomorrow I would eat my last meal at Mamas Fish House. The food is remarkable, the locale is amazing, and the ambiance will transport you away. I must warn you that it is a very expensive place, so I do not frequent it every time I’m there. But I know you will enjoy.
In Lahaina there are numerous restaurants from burger joins to first class cuisine.
Pick up a Maui Magazine it will be very helpful.
Is there local entertainment locally?
There are numerous events going all the time. Luaus are very popular, the oldest and only one that represents all Hawaiian is the Old Lahaina Lu’au. The food, dancing, crafts are all Hawaiian.
An alternate show is the feast at Lele in Lahaina. It is performed on the sand, with dancers from Tahiti, New Zealand, and Samoa.
If magic interests you there is a great show on Front street in Lahaina, it’s called Warren and Anabelles.
Where can we get snorkels, fins and masks?
There is an endless supply of local stores that will rent or sell you the equipment. At the condo I have an outdoor closet that has lots of pool and beach toys including fins etc. I have for your use I have a standup paddle board and two kayaks that are available for your use. If you wish to use them, you will need to sign a release form for me.
What do you have in the condo for rainy day entertainment?
I have some board games for children and a couple games for adults.
I also have a hundred or so movies for your entertainment. You will also find 40 or more books for your sunbathing leisure.
What activities do you tell your guests to experience as a once in a lifetime experience?
There are numerous organizations that are available for locals and guests alike, you can contribute your time to help restore projects like ancient fishponds, lost villages, or trails that need help. I worked with a group that is restoring a village in a valley above Ka’anapali. It was work but it was a great time.
Which restaurant has the best views?
Mamas Fish House has wonderful food and great views. It is on the East side of the island just South of the airport, a bit of a drive but well worth it. Merriman’s in Kapalua is about five minutes north of the condo. It has delectable food and is high above the coast so you can see for miles.
Share a fun fact about the island that you’ve learned since having your unit?
I am interested in the geologic development of Maui. I was reading that the islands of Maui, Lanai and Molokai were all one many years ago.
